The ice-and-iron wax lift

You will need

• Ice cubes in a zip-lock bag · From your freezer — free
• Butter knife or spoon · From your kitchen drawer — free
• Brown paper bag or plain paper bag (not printed/glossy) · From pantry or Woolies checkout — free/~$0.10
• Iron (household clothes iron) · From your linen cupboard — free
• Carpet stain remover or dry-cleaning solvent · Bunnings or Woolies — try Preen Oxi-Action Carpet Spray ~$6, or Bosisto's Eucalyptus Spray ~$5 works well on residue
• Clean white cloth · Old tea towel or paper towel — free

Step 1

Freeze the wax hard

Place the zip-lock bag of ice cubes directly on the wax patch and leave it for 5–10 minutes. You want the wax completely solid and brittle, not soft or rubbery. Don't skip this — it's the whole trick.

Step 2

Snap and scrape it off

Once frozen solid, press down firmly on the wax with your thumb — it should crack and pop off in pieces. Use the blunt edge of a butter knife or spoon to flick out the remaining chunks. Vacuum up all the bits before moving on.

Step 3

Iron out the residue

Set your iron to a low-medium heat (no steam). Place a piece of plain brown paper bag over the remaining wax stain, then press the warm iron over it for 5–10 seconds. The paper absorbs the melted wax like a sponge — lift it away and repeat with a fresh section of paper until nothing more transfers.

Step 4

Treat the grease shadow

Even after the wax is gone, a faint oily shadow often remains. Spray a small amount of carpet stain remover or eucalyptus spray onto a clean white cloth and blot (never rub) the area from the outside in. Let it sit for 2 minutes then blot with a dry cloth until the mark lifts.

Step 5

Let it dry and fluff

Leave the patch to air dry completely — about 30 minutes. Once dry, use your fingers or a stiff brush to gently fluff the carpet fibres back up. Vacuum one more time and the spot should look like nothing happened.

If the carpet fibres have melted, fused, or the backing is damaged from heat → stop, you need a carpet repair specialist (search 'carpet patching' on airtasker or hipages).
