The business-card seal test (and the $8 fix)

You will need

• A business card or thin piece of paper · Any old card from your wallet — free
• Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) · Woolies or Chemist Warehouse, ~$4 for a small tub
• Warm soapy water in a bowl · Dishwashing liquid from under the sink — free
• Soft cloth or sponge · Any cleaning cloth you have at home — free
• Replacement fridge door seal (if needed) · Search your fridge brand + model number on eBay or Appliances Online — usually $20–$60 AUD

Step 1

Do the business-card test

Close the fridge door on a business card so half sticks out, then try to pull it free. Do this all the way around the door — top, sides, and bottom. If the card slides out easily anywhere, that spot isn't sealing properly and cold air is leaking out.

Step 2

Clean the seal thoroughly

Mix a little dishwashing liquid in warm water and wipe down the entire rubber seal with a soft cloth, getting into all the folds. Grime and food residue stop the seal from gripping the fridge properly and this alone often solves a weak seal. Dry it completely before testing again.

Step 3

Revive a stiff or flattened seal with Vaseline

Run a thin smear of petroleum jelly along the entire rubber gasket using your finger. This softens the rubber and helps it grip the metal frame again — it's the non-obvious trick most people don't know. Re-do the business-card test; many seals pass after this treatment.

Step 4

Reshape a warped seal with warm water

If part of the seal looks kinked or folded, soak a cloth in warm (not boiling) water and hold it against the warped section for 30 seconds, then press the seal back into shape. Rubber has memory and gentle heat helps it return to its original form.

Step 5

Replace the seal yourself if it's cracked or torn

Find your fridge's brand and model number (usually on a sticker inside the fridge compartment) and order a replacement seal online. Most seals simply push into a channel around the door edge and can be swapped without tools in about 15 minutes — warm the new seal in a bucket of hot water first to make it pliable.

The stop point

If the door itself is visibly bent or twisted, the hinges are broken or the fridge is more than 15 years old and running warm → stop, you need an appliance repair technician (search for a local one on hipages.com.au).
